Exploring Siem Reap will change your photography forever. As Cambodia’s cultural capital, it is home to iconic sites like Angkor Wat as well as hidden gems such as Beng Mealea. Photographing temples here can be a challenge, with harsh light, large crowds, and complex compositions to navigate. Beng Mealea, a 12th-century temple covered in jungle vines and ruins, gave me the perfect warm-up before exploring the busier temples of Angkor. To make the most of my time, I booked a one-to-one Siem Reap photography tour with a local expert. My mentor knew the best locations, the ideal light, and how to find angles away from the crowds. At Preah Khan temple, I captured an unforgettable shot of monks crossing a doorway — one of my favourite images from Cambodia. That moment taught me the value of patience, timing, and anticipating moments in travel photography. Working with a guide or joining a photography workshop can completely transform your results.
